Given all the non-fun things you have to do in a bathroom and the fact that you don't spend much time in there anyways, I like my bathrooms fun and a little adventurous. You know those restaurants where the bathroom is so randomly unexpected and amazing that you come back to the table and tell all your friends about it? Well that's the effect I am looking for. I wanted to do a really fun wallpaper but it looks complicated so another cheaper option might be What is Blik decals. I love the fact that they're easy to apply but they don't look like some kid stuck stickers on the wall. I like these Iron Vine ones on the left and they have everything from a Mario Brothers scene to airplanes and flowers, to Keith Herring art and polka dots:)
A living room for under $1500: Remember how I asked my friend Claire (who was recently recognized as an influential design blogger by Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Magazine) to make a great living room for me with my gray, purple, and gold inspiration?! Well this is what she designed! I can get this whole look for under $1500! So excited she made that happen:) My favorite piece is that gold lamp, and the reading nook is so thoughtful!! She told me the most cost effective way to change the look of my home is through wall art, curtains, pillows, rugs and lighting. No need to buy all new stuff, just build off the basics!Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-18263940207244612962010-06-04T00:55:00.006-04:002010-06-04T01:25:01.101-04:00Trend I am feeling: NEON nails!!
Summer has officially started and the colors in the stores are bright and beautiful...and NEON. Whether or not it's easy for you to wear and coordinate bright colors, one easy way to incorporate neon into your daily routine is through your nails. If you don't want your co-workers to see, try your toes first. I was at Walgreens today and found a neon Sinful Colors Nail Enamel collection for $1.99 each! The paint goes on pretty thinly so I would recommend avoiding the neon yellow, but for $1.99 I am pretty happy. For a higher quality check out the O.P.I. brights line or some of the brighter MAC shades like Scorcher, Steamy and Shirelle:)Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-33982356117730366022010-05-19T18:21:00.009-04:002010-05-20T11:54:38.194-04:00Enlisting Help from My Superstar friendsDay 2 in Chicago: Now that I found my place, I have a lot of time on my hands. I did two awesome things while here...First, I had a lovely lunch with my great aunt and distant cousins. I also asked my professional designer friend Claire who is quoted in this month's Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles Magazine to help me design a living room based on this inspiration board she designed. Isn't she talented?!?! It's perfect for my mood right now. Let me know what you think!! Also, to all my bschool friends who are wondering how to design your new apartment, hire her to help you out before she becomes the next Nate Berkus!!Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-90139104319249229362010-05-18T22:14:00.004-04:002010-05-18T22:42:16.055-04:00Do it Yourself Designing!
Good news!! I just found my Chicago apartment. The building is AMAZING. There's a fire pit next to the pool and hot tub, which is to the right of the poolside cabanas. Yep, that's right, not just lounge chairs...CABANAS. Inside, there's home theater that fits 22, as well as regular pilates and yoga classes that take place whenever there's not a game going on in the indoor basketball court. Wow, we are not in NYC anymore!

I knew this moment was approaching, and needed some inspiration for the new place. I am really excited about painting the walls (which I've never done before) and giving the place some personality, but needed inspiration. So, my friends and I went to Made by Me in Cambridge for a little pottery painting. My friends made everything from a precious business card holder for the new business she's starting, to a ruffly blue bowl with yellow stars (a la le petit prince) to boxes adorned with paisley and fleur de lys designs. I made a mirror frame (see above-I glued the mirror in after it was glazed). Apparently I am into gray's, lavenders, and purples, so I think this color palate will begin to inspire my living room! Not only is painting really relaxing (even if you have limited artistic ability, like myself) but you get to make each piece completely your own. It's a loud, noisy world out there, and sometimes you need to take a moment to find your inner color voice-so go forth and find a pottery painting place near you!

The next few days will be all about my color choices for my new place. Stay posted, I'll need your help deciding!!Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-39944830269202076392010-05-16T17:02:00.004-04:002010-05-16T17:23:58.077-04:00Edition by Banana Republic
I went to wine country with my girls last week. There's a ton to blog about but the first blog-worthy subject is Edition by Banana Republic. It was our last day in Santa Rosa, and we had a full day before heading to the airport. So how do 10 women decide to spend their day...Shopping! First we went to the outlet malls in Petaluma Village which was particularly fruitful given our low expectations, then headed to downtown SF. One of my friends pointed me to Edition, Banana Republic's only accessories store. 40% of the items are only available at the store.
When asked why he launched the store, the president of Banana Republic noted, "There’s a lot of high-end jewelry that’s not really accessible. There was a big opportunity in the market to fill that white space and offer accessible and affordable accessory." I couldn't agree more Mr. President. I still thought the prices were a tad high (the best things hoovered in the $80-$100+ price range) but I loved the concept. The pieces were just edgy enough to be shop-worthy. If you are ever in SF, check it out!!Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-43995834249953690642010-04-26T21:53:00.002-04:002010-04-26T22:32:54.518-04:00People who inspire me
Jeff Leatham- I saw him on Oprah's show on people who have their dream jobs. Am I really modeling this right now?"

If you MUST buy a "bib" necklace...consider these tips before you purchase something you will regret in less than half a season.

Stay away from a netting or fabric base. If it looks like someone yacked on your shirt, or a 3 year old made it in arts class, it's probably a bad move. Here is a picture (on the right) of a bib necklace with structure. It would be fun in a bright orange...looks a little more like necklace and a little less like yack.

Opt for stones and metal over fabric or chains. Again, see above pictures or the picture on the left. Not a member? Go ahead and click on the link! The discounts on really quality discounts are unbelievably, too good to be true deep, making the most trendy designers accessible to the everyday person.

Rookie of the Year: eight1six. This site was started by two soon to be HBS alums (so you know it's legit), and I can't wait until it launches (sometime in April or May)! These ladies bring you designer jewelry before it hits high end department stores and specialty retailers without the retail markup (see necklace to the left). I think it will be a big hit. Sign up now and be one of the first to be "in on the secret!"

The Jury's Still Out: Rue la la. I'm pseudo impressed...the selection hasn't blown me out of the water yet but these $99 shoes are pretty sweet for a night out. Can't hurt to join right?

The thinking woman's e-commerce: oohilove. Think Sotheby's meets Ebay. This is an auction house recently launched by some Stanford grads, and the amount of over-thinking that went into this site is apparent. Warning: It's complicated. You buy bid packs, you pay money to bid but you might not win, but maybe you can redeem the bids somehow, and if you can't bid you can hire a bid assistant...huh?? I've taken 2 HBS courses on negotiations and I'm still confused...so many moving parts. But if you can figure it out, you might get some $250 Chanel earrings for $0.50 or a Louis Vuitton $447 wallet for $11.10. Here's why I love it:

1) It's full of contradiction!: It's spikey, yet subtle, glam with edge, scary and sweet, all at the same time. You can't be easily compartmentalized and neither can your jewelry. I love a little uneasy contradiction, and this is it.

2) It doesn't look desperate. This jewelry will definitely attract attention, however you won't look like you're trying too hard to be cool and hip.
3) It's reasonably priced! Some pieces can cost $400+, but you could score a necklace or a pair of earrings for a decent price (nothing on this page costs more than $100). Also, nOir is often featured on Gilt, if you're looking for a deeper discount.

Keep your eye out for nOir!! I can hardly call it a trend because I've been in love with it for about 4 years now. I was first introduced to the style when a couple of my friends took me to see "the earring lady" on W. Broadway in Soho and now I'm hooked. Here's why its so cool:
1) It's unique. Wire jewelry is often handmade, so really no two pieces look alike. I haven't seen this style produced en masse, so you probably won't see your jewelry on someone else.
2) It can be cheap. Any up-and-coming jeweler on the streets of NYC can throw together a beautiful piece of artwork made with wire, and they often do!
3) It's versatile! You can wear these pieces to work, to the club, or on a sunny day on the weekend.

They're super appropriate for the spring and summer so get your pair and start rocking them today! Now...back to my paper:)Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-72563163688931874792010-04-13T18:32:00.004-04:002010-04-13T19:16:28.937-04:001, 2, 3, 4....I Declare Designer Sunglass WarThe sun is starting to come out on a consistent basis, and I'm excited to blog about summer accessories! Today, I launch an epic battle against designer sunglasses. I am hard pressed to find a pair that are truly splurge-worthy. DON'T DO IT.

A) I always lose or break my sunglasses. The more expensive they are the more I break them.
B) Some days I want to be a rockstar, sometimes I feel like a socialite, sometimes I feel like pilot, sometimes I want to re-live the 50's--and gosh darnet I should have a pair of sunglasses for all of those moods.
C) Outrageous sunglasses are fun! And for every pair of designer glasses out there, I can find one I like more for less. Some of the best pairs of aviator glasses reside in your local gas station. When I buy expensive sunglasses, I end up buying pretty basic ones, because I feel like I have to wear them every day to justify how much I'm spending, but then I'm bored with myself and my accessories. Everyone loses.

I remember in 2005, I bought my first legit pair of Paul Smith superstar glasses, and I was crushed when they broke for no good reason. Then I got some Chanel aviators...the lens fell out:(

I got these from Urban Outfitters. I'm often asked, "Who's sunglasses are those?!?!" Well Ms. Inquisitive Stranger, they're from the random designer of no one in particular. And yes, they do look pretty legit. I lost them in Thailand and I was pretty bummed...so when I got back to the States I went right back to the store and bought another pair (because they were only $10!!). I also suggest Filene's Basement or Marshall's for some great sunglass finds as well.

If I had to splurge on one designer, maybe it would be Ray-Bans. But if I do I promise to get fun ones, like these!!!

There are an array of very fun colors and styles and they retail at ~$135 so you can experiment without feeling too bad about it.
So join with me in ditching the designer duds this summer!
<a id="publishButton" class="cssButton" href="javascript:void(0)" target="" onclick="if (this.className.indexOf("ubtn-disabled") == -1) {var e = document['stuffform'].publish;(e.length) ? e[0].click() : e.click(); if (window.event) window.event.cancelBubble = true; return false;}">

Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-8307438766985729952010-04-12T17:53:00.012-04:002010-04-12T21:24:21.699-04:00Summertime Trend: White Bling! What is a must have for the summertime? A white dress coupled with some bedazzled white jewelry! That invitation to Diddy's Hampton White Party is probably in the mail as we speak and you need to be prepared.

Here are some ideas: A White Bedazzled bracelet or ring would be tons of fun for a party or a day on the town. Check this "Dazzle Cuff" out from Gilt's Miriam Salat Jewelry Sale. A little pricey for me (even after the 60%+ discount) but I'm sure you'll be able to find a pretty sweet knock off at Claire's or Aldo in about 5 weeks. Speaking of awesome, cheap finds, check out this "pave" ring from forever 21. $5.80. That's what I'm talking about. If this thing doesn't catch your eye from across the room, I don't know what will.

Another summer must have: A JEWELED WHITE WATCH. Make it happen. Below is an example of my idea of an ideal white summer watch . BUT if you're on a budget, try this one from Arden B. for $29, or head to Aldo Shoes and snab this $35 flexi watch. 5x the flexibility and 1/9th of the price:)
Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-89603533476375216192010-04-12T03:10:00.019-04:002010-04-12T23:17:11.807-04:00Home Accessories Anyone? In my opinion, there are very few shopping trips that are more entertaining than searching for home decor. You can save on the basics, and use one little accent pillow to take a room from a B to an A- in a heartbeat. My favorite finds are vases, pillows, and mirrors. I'm moving to Chicago this summer and cannot wait to redecorate!

I would be remiss if I did not highlight my absolute favorite home decor store: Z Gallerie. Why do I love Z Gallerie? Only because my favorite pillows live there! ALL OF MY BEDS have featured an accent pillow from Z. Their home decor is simultaneously subtle, sparkly, classy, unique, and fun! Their website does not do the store justice, but check it out to get a taste and see if there's one near you! Want to grab that perfect necklace for your outfit, but it's buried somewhere underneath 8 pairs of earrings, 3 bracelets, and 5 other necklaces you have no interest in wearing?
Get some coat hangers and call it a day! Coat hangers are excellent for necklace storage (and, let's be honest, who really hangs coats somewhere other than in a closet anyways????). Tuck them behind a door, or somewhere else generally hidden. Your necklaces will never be tangled again, you'll clearly be able to see what you have, and it's kind of a fun way to decorate a boring, hidden wall.Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4359325543601783407.post-79475251884500669192010-04-12T02:17:00.007-04:002010-04-12T03:39:27.329-04:00I fell in love with accessories all over again
This is my first post on my first blog....here goes. I thought I'd start with something that truly inspired me. In fact it's so inspirational that I was wearing it when someone suggested I start a jewelry blog! I don't usually splurge on jewelry. In fact, anything that costs over $40 makes me cringe. However, this necklace haunted me in my dreams. I saw it in the store, freaked out at the price, slept on it, and went back for it. Yes, that $80 was completely painful to spend but it was absolutely worth every penny- even for a struggling student. I got this from J.Crew's new sister store, Madewell. Isn't she lovely? Today I wore it with all grey, a black blazer with antique gold zipper trim, and my Christian Siriano gold payless shoes. I can imagine wearing it at work underneath a crisp white blouse, or paired with a fun cocktail dress. In short, its awesome if I do say so myself. This necklace made me fall in love with accessories all over again:)Carolinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15885876813488291410noreply@blogger.com2
